why would it be happening after I've already uploaded, worked on the images.  it's happening when I go into develop to re-tweak an image that I've already worked on.

I agree with Sean, if image is proprietary raw, corruption like this is probably due to failing hard disk, but can also be apparent due to failing ram, somewhat surprisingly.

However, if image is DNG or RGB, then image can become corrupted, when there is hardware failure, just by using Lightroom, if you have auto-write xmp on, or have manually saved xmp (and/or dng preview).

Why? because Lr may rewrite the file, the integrity of which depends on properly functioning hardware.

My advice?

* check ram too

* turn auto-write xmp off until problem is resolved (and don't save manually either).

* make backups without overwriting previous backups, since hardware problems can get worse before they get better.

* help me/us rally for the option to prevent Lr from writing/re-writing original master files without permission (e.g. xmp sidecars for all file-types).
