I never got my camera to show on the desktop as a device like a thumb drive or such but you might want to use Finder and see if it shows up there as Hal suggested. I can't imagine why that would work better than the other methods but it is worth a try. You may have a flakey usb port on the laptop, cable or the camera may have intermittent problems when trying to transfer the files or some other hardware problem.
