I have neve seen that filter before.
Very possibly the most underused feature in Windows. It's in the corner of every Explorer window, yet *lots* of people never use it.
I think sometimes modern software designers place tiny-ness at too high a value - if there was a big (e.g. standard/familiar dialog box) UI for filtering, and an obvious button to click to bring it up, instead of everything cleverly confined to the tiniest region of screen (and therefore somewhat cryptic), maybe people would use it more - dunno. To be fair - the tiny-ness does allow one to easily see all files in the list whilst tinkering with the filter, still: I have 2 large monitors... (good for tiny laptops I guess ).
Another good use for it is deleting old catalog and/or photo backups.
