thanks for your comments. i didn't worry about the filename conflict because i don't shoot in BOTH jpg and RAW. But to answer your question. A filename.jpg with some ACR edits applied in Bridge 5 would yield a filename.xmp (just like it would for a filename.NEF).
Maybe this was a problem with Bridge that influenced the decision to stick with embedded xmp in Lightroom - maintains compatibility with previous business / spec without the potential for conflict - just guessing..

There are none that I am aware of, but there was a feature request for it, somewhere in the feedback forum I think:
