Perhaps worth noting: Snapshots *are* saved in XMP, so if you snapshot your virtual copies when you're done, and maybe name them with something like: "Virtual Copy Name = My Groovy Alternative", then if worst came to worse those virtual copies could be recreated from the snapshots, granted, it would probably have to be manual (one at a time) unless somebody has managed to automate (I haven't, yet).
