By all means, builds a very robust folder structure (I do), then LR will import all that and show you this in Library just as you'd see in the Finder or Explorer. I think an approach that doesn't depend solely on LR to find photo's is an excellent idea. LR will mimic whatever structure you build outside of it (within reason). The key after that is never moving, renaming, deleting files OUTSIDE of Lightroom! It doesn't know what you did. But in LR, you can name, delete, move, add folders, etc.
