Images are not "saved" in Lightroom. The changes made using Lightroom are stored in the catalog/database. There is an option to write changes to XMP, but that would only store the settings. It would not retain any history. Even if you had to reinstall Lightroom, you should still have been able to open the catalog that contained the image. Then you would have had the history of the changes.
