In Lr you have to do two separate backups:
a) backup of the catalog, i.e. the database where Lr saves everything you do. The catalog backup is best done with the backup feature built into Lr. Go >Edit >Catalog Settings >General tab.
In the small window select <Every Time Lt exits> and <OK>. Next time you close Lr, the backup dialog will come up that lets you select a location for the backup. I would recommend an external hard drive for the backup, simply because it "survives" a major disaster of your computer. But if you want to have it on an internal drive - fine, only caveat: do not put the catalog backup next to the "working" catalog".
I would not use super-duper, or any other backup program for the catalog because when Lr makes a catalog backup, it will also optimize the catalog, check its integrity, and optimize the previews. These things are vital to a healthy and lean catalog and previews.
b) Backup of your image files. Lr has no provisions for backing up the mage files. This is best done via your OS, or any backup program you wish.
The backup catalog is identical with the "working" catalog if the backup has been done by Lr. You open a backup catalog in Lr simply by double-clicking it, or in Lr by going >File >Open another catalog, and navigating to the location of the backup.
As long as the names and/or the location of image files and folders has not changed since the backup catalog was made, your images will be displayed.
